PPC Mission StatementThe mission of the Patuxent Presbyterian Church, through the grace of God, is to meet the needs of the local and worldwide communities by providing biblically based worship, nurture, prayer, Christian education, and personal religious opportunities for all people. PPC Vision StatementWe of the Patuxent Presbyterian Church see ourselves as being and becoming a more vibrant and caring church family that, in the Presbyterian tradition, brings Christ into our lives through an active faith.
Who We ArePatuxent Presbyterian Church is the people, not just a building or somewhere we go. It is a place of relationships developed by years of fellowship and a place that welcomes newcomers seeking a warm worship environment. Visitors will find a church excited about being in a strikingly beautiful new church complex, eager to grow in Spirit and size. We are a neighborly congregation that is united in faith and purpose to serve the community and the world in the name of Jesus Christ. Patuxent Presbyterian Church welcomes all persons into its fellowship regardless of background. Some have referred to our church as a cultural/spiritual center; PPC has an active music ministry and its members are leaders in many community service activities. We take an active role in serving the community as we live out our faith in practical and tangible ways. We have committed ourselves to being a church where people laugh and rejoice together, cry and comfort together, worship and pray together, mourn and heal together, share faith and doubt together, accept one another as people with gifts and imperfections... seeking to be closer to God.
What's Special About PPC?
A Brief History of PPCPatuxent Presbyterian Church in California Maryland is a Christian congregation of believers who are members of Presbyterian Church (USA). As part of a connectional church we also belong to the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic and to the National Capital Presbytery. Although the Presbyterian denomination had been present in Southern Maryland as the Patuxent Congregation from 1643 until the church relocated to Upper Marlboro in 1704, and later to Hyattsville in 1874, for more than 250 years there was no church of the reformed tradition in this area. In 1956, the Patuxent Presbyterian Church was organized in St. Mary'sCounty (at the time it was known as First Presbyterian) and to this day is the only Presbyterian Church (USA) in the county. Meeting first in a local theater, the small group of dedicated people eventually, in 1958, built a church on land donated for the purpose in Town Creek. Over the years, many Navy families have helped to enrich the permanent congregation. In 1988, in order to serve both St. Mary's and Calvert Counties, the church purchased the property on the corner of Kingston Creek and Route 4, just one mile from the Thomas Johnson Bridge. The Town Creek building was sold in December 1993, and the church was moved into a temporary location in Wildewood Center. The first service in the new building was held on December 24, 1995.
Future -- Where We're GoingOur new building has given us a church home that is not only beautiful but also prepares us to move into the future. Patuxent Presbyterian has an active membership of 350. With the support and encouragement of the National Capital Presbytery, we have accepted the challenge to become a regional church for Southern Maryland. The congregation and presbytery will both benefit, but the challenge is a great one indeed. We have a very active lay leadership and membership. We are in the process of developing new programs to serve our faithful longtime members, as well as the new members and visitors who have been arriving in great numbers. Our current church membership is eager to participate in this growth -- the momentum is exciting! We invite you to become part of this excitement. The congregation expects the following changes in the next five years:
